But that is where reality ends and fantasy begins for the political attacks against Mr. McCarthyism was an hysteria built on the fantasy that Communists were watching you, and that the US would be subverted by their insidious and secret actions. Seen in another way, it gave the Soviet espionage specialists an unreasonably high reputation, in fact, that they were unstoppable. This was etched into the cultural memory of the United States, so it was easy to get this out and make the astounding conjecture that Mr.

How the KGB infiltrated classical music

Last night a writing friend and I participated in an even that puts us right at the fringes of the fringes of New York literary society—a reading sponsored by the Mystery Writers of America at KGB Bar in the East Village. KGB Bar is hidden away on the second story of an old tenement, up a vertiginous flight of stairs. Writers hooked up in the publishing world read here with pleasure and without pay to an adoring public. The crowd loves it.

The series was founded in the late s by author Terry Bisson and editor Alice K.

Reading at the KGB Bar

It has long been known that the Soviet state security service currently the KGB resorts to abduction and murder to combat what are considered to be actual or potential threats to the Soviet regime. A list of those who have fallen victim to such action over the years would be a very long one and would include even the co-founder of the Soviet state, Leon Trotsky. Several well-known Soviet assassination operations which have occurred since the rise of Khrushchev attest to the fact that the present leadership of the USSR still employs this method of dealing with its enemies. The sudden disappearance or unexpected death of a person known to possess anti-Soviet convictions immediately raises the suspicion of Soviet involvement. Because it is often impossible to prove who is responsible for such incidents, Soviet intelligence is frequently blamed and is undoubtedly credited with successes it actually. On the other hand, even in cases where the Soviet hand is obvious, investigation often produces only fragmentary information, due to the KGB ability to camouflage its trail. In addition, Soviet intelligence is doubtless involved in incidents that never become officially recognized as executive action, such as assassinations which are recorded as accidents, suicides, or natural deaths. All of the factors cited above have helped to obscure Soviet practices in regard to assassinations and abductions outside the USSR.
